clouds

When I was small,
I stared at everything
Longer than others
Until someone pulled me away

And I learned,
Through ridicule and shame
To hide my curiosity

I built a tall straw man,
Fully grown and paying rent
He won adult bingo
And knew exactly where to go
Until he didn't.

I forgot about him,
Replaced with new convictions
And truths
Until the world showed,
Who I've always been

And I was horrified
To see myself,
Reflected in the sky
With all the other children
Who were not allowed to ask why.
